Healing

20. Healing

The Angel of Healing is known by the name of Raphael. In some Bibles, the Book of Tobit describes him not only as a healer, but a true friend who rescues Tobit from demons, helps him fulfill a quest and find a wife. In this picture, Healing is dressed in rose pink, the color I associate with Jesus who is the best healer who ever existed. He is also wearing a robe of grass green, the color of healing, while his wings are white, the color of sterility that is the traditional color worn in hospitals by doctors and nurses. The boy who was injured is wearing white, which is the color of innocence. Many of us are hurt in accidents that we did nothing to create, and this child represents the unexpected hurts that can come in oneís life. His skin is off color, suggesting the toll that is taken on any body by stress, the cause of much sickness in itself. The childís mother is wearing light green, showing the natural healing every motherís care provides for her children. Her collar of pure white covers her heart with sincerity. Her cloak is blue, the color of sadness that every parent feels when her child is hurt or ill.

Healing is administering two kinds of healing in this picture. He is transmitting healing by the laying on of hands with the child, which is an ancient practice described many times in the New Testament. He is also looking deeply into the motherís eyes, suggesting mental and emotional healing that comes through counseling and communal prayer. His left wing is spread over the mother and child in a gesture of comfort and protection. Healing has a halo of pure white around his head, indicating pure motives while he heals. There is a halo of pure white around his hand on the boyís head, showing that the pure motive extends also to his healing touch. The floor is dark brown, the color of good earth. The wall behind them is golden brown, the color of bread. Both are needed by a physical body for its elementary building blocks and for nourishment.

verseKey Verse 20.134

Jeremiah 17:14 Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

Let us read this verse as a prescription for what ails us. The Lord is the divine physician who knows all of our needs and has all the answers. The Angel of Healing asks us, what is the best medicine in the world for any complaint? Do you know? Have you ever needed this medicine? What was the problem that created your need? How did this medicine help you? Could you share this with others?

Verse 20.135

Mark 3:15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

This little verse is the authority Jesus gives to his disciples to continue his healing work here on earth. Jesus mentions two kinds of healing: physical and spiritual (casting out of devils). Have you ever had a spiritual sickness? How did you know that? What was it like? What symptoms were there? Is there a cure for spiritual illness? What is it and how do you get it? How much time does it take to heal?

Verse 20.136

Luke 5:24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

At first look, this verse makes it appear that disease is here for Jesus' use. Disease allows Jesus to prove to us that he has earthly power by his ability to cure physical illness. Look also at what Jesus says ... ďArise!Ē

Have you had a physical illness that is depressing you? Where is your sight, down or up? To whom are you looking for help? Yes, doctors, nurses, and other health practitioners are one way that God helps us with physical problems. They can only treat the physical symptoms. Is there something more when you are sick? Is there an emotional illness or a spiritual one too? Chances are that when we are sick on one level, we have problems that have leaked into these other areas as well.

Remember, there is no quick fix. Look back and see how long it took you to get into this dilemma. It will take work, a team effort to get out of this trouble. Do you have prayer partners? Do you have a pastor or spiritual mentor who can help you with emotional and spiritual problems? Keep looking up, for God is the answer. What we have to do is find out what the question is.

Verse 20.137

Luke 8:1 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,

Many doctors know that a patient must have hope to rally after a serious operation or physical trauma. Hope is the rocket fuel that gets us out of the doldrums caused by our depression. Where do we find the inspiration necessary to have hope? This verse suggests that hope can come from hearing about the kingdom of God. What do you know about the kingdom of God? Where is it and how do you get there? Do you have to wait until you die, or is it possible here on earth? How do you know? What can you do to find out the answers to these questions? Who will you ask and where will you look? What will you do when you find the answers, share it with others?

Verse 20.138

James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

The Angel of Healing brings us this verse to show us that it is the function of some people in the body of Christ to fulfill the role of healer. When I personally think of a healer, I think of Jesus Christ, not anyone here on earth. What we do is act as Christís hands to do the anointing, since he is not here in a physical body today. Like the nurse, we assist the Divine Healer. Do you belong to a church that has the office of elder, or some similar position, where a trained team practices spiritual healing under the authority of the church and of Christ? If not, there are such churches around and you can let God lead you to one if you are in need. You can also ask the leadership of your church to consider making healing a part of their ministry. This will give you the opportunity to participate as one of Christís assistants.

If you have a physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual problem, take it to the ministry of your church. Ask for their assistance in prayer. Record any results that you get at any level. Once you receive a healing, you are obligated to pay for it by telling others about the work of Jesus here on earth today.

Verse 20.139

Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

The Angel of Healing shows us this verse to remind us of the difference between the old covenant (in the Old Testament) and the new one under Jesus Christ. This verse has many preconditions to receiving or keeping good health. They are: listening to God, being righteous, obeying Godís commandments, and staying within Godís rules of behavior. Under Christ, you are told to ask for Godís grace and to sin no more once you have received it.

Do you know someone in your church body who has an illness that seems to be incurable? Do they appear to be obeying all of Godís laws and yet they are still sick? This is one of the mysteries of life. It does not mean that there is no God or that God is cruel and arbitrary. If this is the case for anyone, ask the Holy Spirit for understanding. Ask for wisdom and discernment when healing does not occur. Be patient and record any insights that you get. Be sure to share your new wisdom with others.

Verse 20.140

Psalms 30:2 O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

With this last verse, the Angel of Healing tells us that we should never forget to ask the divine healer for help when we are sick. There is a great deal that can be done by modern medicine. The cures and therapies number in the thousands, as well as the kinds of new drugs that reach the market every year, making modern science truly a wonderful gift from God. The practice of medicine has also changed over the years. Once we had a family doctor who delivered every child in the family, sometimes for three or four generations, and who came to our home when we were ill. We now visit clinics where we may never see the same medical professional twice. I use the term, medical professional, because there are so many specialties these days. The old bed-side manner of compassion that was the trademark of every good doctor has been replaced by an assembly line mentality, brought on by the sheer number of patients seen daily. We can easily become wrapped up in this sterile scientific environment, especially when there is a life threatening illness.

Do you remember to seek the help of Christ? Do you have a prayer team that is backing you up when you cannot pray for yourself? Do you rest in Godís love for you, in spite of what the surface may seem to show you?

As we leave the Angel of Healing, let us remember that health is a very precious commodity. That which we often take for granted is the sweetest gift of all. Remember to take time each day to thank God for the good health that you and your loved ones have. Remember to ask for help when there is a problem. No matter how small it may seem, it is important to our Father. Always seek the prayer of family, friends and church. If you have no church, search for one. Every church exists to help with prayer those who cannot help themselves. Every time a prayer is answered with a healing, no matter how small, brag on God. It is just one more way he has to prove to you that he cares about you personally.

You should pray for a sound mind in a sound body.
